Overcoming Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk is that voice inside our head that tells us we’re not good enough, we’re unworthy, and we’re incapable of achieving our dreams.

It is this voice that holds us back from pursuing passions, interests and reaching our full potential in anything we want to achieve.

One of the most important things to remember is that you are not alone. Negative self-talk is a very common issue that many struggle with daily. Being aware of the tools you have in your pocket will help to ensure you are not struggling daily.

Recognize your negative self-talk: The first step to combating negative self-talk is to recognize when it’s happening. Pay attention to the thoughts that pop in your head and ask yourself if they’re helpful or harmful. If they’re harmful, challenge them. Try writing them down when they pop up to help you remember the thoughts and confront them.

Challenge your negative self-talk: When you notice negative self-talk, challenge it with positive and realistic statements. Example: “I’m not good enough to do this,” replace it with, “I may not be perfect, but I’m capable of doing my best.” If you wrote down the negative thoughts, write down below the thought, a new way of thinking. Challenge yourself on paper and keep a record of it, should you want to go back and see how far you have progressed.

Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and compassion. Remember that you’re human, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Instead of always focusing on your flaws and shortcomings, try to be kind to yourself and focus on your strengths and your strength potential. Remember, we all have to start as beginners and we grow the more we learn.

Surround yourself with positive influences: Spend time with people who uplift and encourage you. Surround yourself with individuals who inspire you to be your best self, and distance yourself from those who bring you down. This goes for social media as well, follow more of the accounts that make you feel good and inspired, and less of the ones that are unmotivating and energy suckers (aka energy vampires).

Practice mindfulness: Being present and mindful can help you stay grounded and calm. When you’re mindful, you’re better able to observe your thoughts without getting caught up in them. Meditation and relaxation techniques would be a great addition to your routine.

One of my goals at work is actually to increase my confidence in my work and my ability. It will be a ongoing challenge but I already see a difference from where I started 2 years. It has been a journey of reminding myself (sometimes daily) that I am capable and my ideas are good ideas and I shouldn’t be afraid to share them.

Overcoming negative self-talk takes time and effort, but it’s possible. With practice, you can learn to recognize and challenge your negative self-talk, build your self-esteem, and live your life to the fullest. Remember to be patient and kind to yourself throughout the process. You deserve to live a life full of self-love and positivity.

Be kind to yourself.
